The OJ hockey team took on the College in the annual fixture on Friday 1st March on the new astro. The OJ side had a fantastic mix of youth and experience with an OJ leaving age range of 39 years years, showing how great it is to have OJ’s from all eras still coming back to play in this fixture.

Hockey vs School 2013In the first half the OJ’s played some great hockey against a mixed a side with a first in the OJ game, some senior girls playing with some future 1st XI players. They played superbly well and took the lead with a very well worked goal but the OJ’s drew level and then took the lead with Oli Rodbourne’s well taken effort. The first goal was an excellent deflected effort scored by New Zealand OJ Tim Thorstensen who is working at the College. The winning streak has got harder each year to defend and the second half against a full 1st XI meant that the OJ’s were going to be under severe pressure. For some of us it is the only game of the year but with some youth in the team it meant we had a good chance of competing. The College drew deservedly level at 2-2 but up stepped Tim Griffths to put away the OJ’s only short corner of the match with just 5 minutes remaining to secure a 3-2 win. The streak continues!

We were looked after very well once again by the College and it was great they upheld the match due to fixture congestion. After the match Mike Bailey, OJ goalkeeper for the match, took us back to his pub, the Royal Oak in Wineham, for some food and drinks and a catch up. It would be great to see more OJ’s next year whether in a playing or supportive capacity.
