Smallpiece, Sir Basil

Basil died in July 1992 aged 85.

He was at Hurst for only two terms before he went to Shrewsbury.. Qualifying as a Chartered Accountant he worked for Hoover Ltd. from 1930 to 1937 and then Doulton and Co. from 1937 to 1948 when he joined the British Transport Commission. He remained there until 1950 when he joined B.O.A.C. before finishing his active career as Chairman of Cunard between 1965 and 1971.He held many directorships, which included Martin’s Bank and Barclays Bank.

He was Chairman of the English Speaking Union. He was awarded the KCVO and was twice married.
