Perkins, John N

Having been a Prefect and House Captain whilst at Hurst, John joined the Tea Department of Allied Suppliers in 1934. In 1937 he joined Liptons in Calcutta where he was Assistant Tea Buyer and Blender. Between 1957 and 1963 he was General Manager of Liptons in Ceylon. In 1963 he joined the Liptons’ Board being Tea Director. In 1973 he became President of the Tea buyers’ Association. He retired in 1976.

During the Second World War he served in Rattray’s Sikhs reaching the rank of Lt. Colonel. From 1943 to 1946 he was seconded to the ICS as Deputy Secretary in the War Department. His father, H W Perkins was at Hurst from 1883 to 1888 and his two sons – J R H Perkins (Red Cross 1961- 66) and G C Perkins (Red Cross 1968 -71) followed in his footsteps.

He was related to F.W. Paice (1854 – 60), A.F. Paice (1857 -1863), J.M. Paice (1862 – 66) and W.A. Paice (1864 – 69) and distantly to J.H. Alabaster (1863 – 68), R.J. Alabaster (1865 – 69), W. Alabaster (1868 – 69), S.H. Byron (Star 1890 – 95) and L.A. Byron (Star) 1895 -1900).
